We need water in our every step of the way in the kitchen – in cooking, washing, cleaning or even for drinking. The kitchen sink is the most used appliance of our home.
We don’t just use it when cooking, but for normal uses too. We drink from it, make ice with it; sometimes, we turn it into a small bathtub to bathe babies!

What is an Under-Sink Water Filtration System?
In most homes of the United States if America, a special filter is installed for the kitchen that is usually placed in the cabinets under the sink. This technology wasn’t really necessary or thought important even a few years ago, but now, almost every home has a water filtration system installed in the kitchen.
Water isn’t really safe to drink to cook without it being treated in a personal filtration system in the house.
Even though there are water treatment systems in all the cities of the United States, the water that reaches our homes aren’t 100% safe, at least not for drinking directly. A simple filtration system in our own kitchens can make it drinkable, even for children.

These under-sink water filtration systems are rather large and not very aesthetically pleasing. Most of them come with complicated machineries and numerous wires – all the best to hide them under the sink.
Besides, under the sink, they have easy access to the house’s water pipes and lines, as well as easy-to-reach when the filters need changing or when there is a problem with the system.
How does an Under-Sink Water Filtration System work?
The water that reaches our home from the local water treatment centers can be sometimes accompanied by lead, hormones, arsenic and other such unwanted contaminants.
While these pollutants are not very harmful in the other parts of the house, consuming them – directly or after cooking – can lead to a number of short-term and long-term health problems. With a water filtration system installed under your sink, the water that comes to your kitchen faucet can be as pure as is possible.
These water filtration systems do not store any water and they don’t have a storage tank. No water is used up in the process.
The amount of water that goes into the filter is cleaned and sent up immediately to the faucet as usable water. No wastewater is produced and this filtration system doesn’t need to be attached to a drainage system.
What are the different types of Under-sink water filtration system?
There are basically two types of water filtration systems that are used in our homes for the kitchen: a conventional one and a simple one.
- A conventional under-sink filter receives cold water from the home’s main water system and sends it to the water filter via a plastic tube. Inside the filter, the water is cleaned in two stages and then instantly delivered to the kitchen faucet to the user.
This system is used for normal drinking water only and works constantly, whenever the user turns the faucet to get water. This is a separate line in the kitchen sink that remains independent of the hot-and-cold water faucet on top of the kitchen sink.
This filtration system only uses the water source under the sink, but the outlet is different.
- A simple under-sink filtration system, on the other hand, the kitchen’s main cold water supply is filtered via the system and delivered to the main cold water outlet of the sink.
The hot water supply isn’t filtered since heated water is usually safer than regular water. This is the type of filtration system that is mostly used in homes these days.
Comparison between different filtration systems
A simple filtration system is the one used in most homes because it is easier to install. It also happens to be less expensive to purchase and install, and can be used anywhere, not just under the sink.
However, with a simple filtration system, the cartridge needs to be replaced more times than in a conventional system. At the same time, a conventional filtration system can be installed in any setting under the kitchen sink, both copper and flexible pipping, but a simple system can only be installed where the connectors are flexible.
Even after undergoing treatment, it is not completely safe to use the water we get in our home for directly drinking. There are so many unwanted pollutants that come with our water that could lead to health issues in the future.
With just a simple step – i.e. installing a water filtration system under our sink – we can stay worry free about our drinking water. We can choose either one for our homes – a simple or a conventional filtration machine, and drink much safer and cleaner water.
